Aikido for Beginners

Beginners are welcomed to train either during one of our “Beginner’s Seminars” or during any “Open” training session (as noted on our training schedule. Beginner’s Seminars are taught on a semi-regular basis and generally occur over a 6 to 8 week period. They are taught by a senior student and cover basic Aikido principles including safety, etiquette, rolling and technique names. Please refer to our Upcoming Events section for information on when the next session begins.

Additionally, when a Beginner’s Seminar is not occurring we welcome beginning students to start training during any Open session, during which time an advanced student will assist the new student in assimilating.

Every beginner should be prepared to experience many feelings ranging from elation to confusion and frustration; however, the student should always feel safe and well taken care of. It is important to understand that every student begins the same way and we all recall our first few months and every other student appreciates, respects and supports every beginner’s experience.

Open Training

Aikido is less an art of techniques and “Kata” (memorized forms) as it is an art of principles integrating mind, body and spirit practiced through repetition. Therefore, both the beginning and advanced student will benefit from the same instruction, albeit practicing at a different level or emphasis. After the instructor demonstrates a given technique, s/he will typically walk around the dojo assisting each student at the level appropriate for each person. The instructor also adjusts the lesson, its techniques and pace depending upon the level of the students in the class. More advanced students also assist junior students generally in a non-verbal manner. Our advanced instruction staff makes sure everyone is challenged but not overwhelmed.
